Cask beer…I wish I had the space (Vertical Stillage)

Vertical Stillage

On a recent call-out, one of our contributing Technicians was chatting to a landlord over a bacon butty when the subject of cask beer came up. The landlord said that he would love to sell cask beer but that he didn’t have the space in his cellar for all the stillages. However all was not lost.

A quick look around the pub cellar and our Technician could see what the landlord was on about. However all was not lost.

The landlord was unfamiliar with vertical stillaging, an alternative method of stillaging cask beer and how little space was required to have it in the cellar. After some discussion and the technician had reassured him that the quality of cask beer being dispensed this way was just as good as traditional horizontal stillaging methods, the landlord decided to give it a go.

Since calling back at this account our technician has found that using vertical stillaging has been a success. The Rose and Crown now has cask beer back on the bar and it is selling quite well.

Vertical stillaging is some times over looked as an efficient method of stillaging where space is at a premium. If you would like to sell cask beer but think you dont have enough room, ask your local Technician for some free advice….it will only cost you a bacon butty!

Read your article with interest. We are one of the largest suppliers to the UK market of Ale Extractors for verticle stillage.

One of the problems encountered with extractors like the one in your photo is the seal to keep the top nut on the tube itself may break over time leading to leakage.

We solve this problem by using stainless steel top nuts and welding them to the tube itself.

We can supply direct at a price of £23.50 + VAT + delivery. This is way below the current Ebay price!

Hi I have just taken over a pub that has upright cask beer and have not got the faintest idea of the correct way to ventilate it or store it. Can you pass on to me any information please. Regards Denise the Dambusters Scampton

    Hi Denise

You have beat us to it we are in the throes of doing an instructional post on vertical stillaging. We are trying to get together some decent photos to explain how and why it works, without them it is very difficult to explain. We will do it shortly.

We have been using them for two years as an emergency and they are fantastic!
