Beer and cider taste off

Hi, I work in a small hotel in Scotland. I have a question regarding the draft beer. Recently there has been complaints about off tastes with our beer and cider, people have mentioned a bitter chemical aftertaste.

I personally clean the beer lines once a week, and have done in the year and a half that I’ve worked there, and these complaints have only started in the last couple of weeks. We recently changed beer line cleaner and I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but there’s been a lot of complaints since then.

Can anyone help me out? Why does the beer and cider taste funny? Could it be because of the line cleaner or do you have any other suggestions?

Any help would be much appreciated as I’m getting a bit of grief and I don’t know how to fix it.

  1. Hi Craig welcome to the Inn Doctor forum. You will have to be more specific with the type of cleaner you are using, for instance have you moved from an alkali cleaner to a caustic cleaner or vice versa? Have you left the caustic cleaner in the line for too long? Are you flushing the line out with enough fresh water after the clean? Does the taste just appear just after you clean the line or is it still there days later? As you say it is a small hotel are there periods when the beer in the line for a long time? I could go on.

  2. HI Craig I echo the comments from Maverick, until we know a little more its hard to diagnose the fault. In terms of Mavericks point regarding Alkali or Caustic ? If you just let us know which line cleaner it is and when the taint is most apparent then someone inc us can help you. Does the funny taste have a TCP smell too it? Most of what you are describing can be solved but first we need to understand the problem better. As a solution is not a one size fits all.
