Cask probes – any good?



We’re getting married in March and want to lay on a cask ale from a local brewery, I have a Carling home tap on a two product cooler which is great (wife hates it, haha!). Just wondering about cooling an ale; Ive been looking at the cask probes, they look superb as we want to keep the cask on display if possible and not cover it in a jacket. does anyone have experience of these probes, come recommended?

  1. I use jackets normally but a probe works just as well. It’s a lot of messing about though, you have to remove the shive etc. What you would have to be careful of is it doesn’t get too cold especially in March (most people wouldn’t bother), you could regulate the flow with a shut off valve. As it is a one off you could make your own using a bit of pipe. Probably your easiest solution would be to order bright beer from your local micro, and store it in a cool area overnight and introduce it to the bar an hour before you use it, that would work fine.

  2. I think happy is right, it’s a one off, I don’t think I would even think of keeping the cask cold, especially this time of the year, you can have it to cold, resulting in flat beer, also you can get what is called a chill haze on the beer,
    So, just keep it
    simple, that way no trouble.

  3. Hi Douglas, many thanks for your advice, appreciated. Can I pick your brains, what would you do to store the keg in the run up to the event? The venue is pretty cool anyway I should imagine, no heating. I was even thinking of buying a thermometer to watch the room Temp! I’ve had an offer of a hand pull hooked up to a Max 110 with a water recirc and a reservoir into the hand pull. What’s the margin of error on a cask ale temperature wise? Cheers!
