Why is this happening when I change a keg?

Just started working full-time in a pub. The lady who showed me how to change the kegs didn’t tell me to switch off the gas first. Just hold the lever handles up when taking them off the old kegs and then push them back down onto the new kegs. And then turn the things on the plastic bit on the wall!! Is this the correct way?!! I’m worried it isn’t cos when I tried to change Belhaven Best today it sprayed all over me!!! Help!

Best practice is to turn off the gas when changing a keg. This will help prevent what happened to you but you should also lift the handle up fully because there will still be some gas left in the line.
