What is a proper Shandy?

To all you knowledgeable people out there let me ask you a question to settle an aurgument. What is a proper shandy.
My pal thinks it is half a pint of mild beer with the same of lemonade. The barmaid at my local, a woman of considerable experience, in many ways, says it is a half of lager with lemonade. I think it is half of bitter with proper ginger beer. When I ask for this in my pub I get strange looks, particularly from fellow customers , who on seeing my cloudy pint of shandy, as the ginger beer makes it look rather like windsor soup, start looking at their own beers to make sure it isn’t cloudy. Who is right. There is a pint of shandy resting on the correct answer.

Yep,half booze half lemonade.Ginger Beer shandy is the same idea only Ginger Beer is used in place of the lemonade.Highly recommended as a severe thirst quencher.Hand Shandy, however,is a relief all of its own… ;D

  3. In my youth in 50s Lancashire there were two shandies. One was half lemonade and half bitter. The other was half dandelion and burdock and half mild.

  4. I think shandy can take quite a few forms. The dandelion and burdock shandy is a new one on me. Apparently bitter and ginger beer used to be popular. So I suppose you take your choice really.
